Annual balance detail
| Age reached | Year-end net flow | Balance |
|---|
All values are in today's USD, using a constant real return. Contributions and withdrawals occur at year end. This is a deterministic illustration; taxes are not included.
How the calculation works
Each year starts with the prior balance. We apply your real return, then add that year's net flow. A phase runs from its starting age up to, but not including, its ending age. A gap means zero net flow. The target is annual retirement spending divided by the safe withdrawal rate. The starting balance is solved from that target while also keeping every intermediate year nonnegative.
“Earliest age to stop saving” turns positive flows to zero from that age onward and leaves zero or negative flows as planned. It requires both no depletion and a balance at or above the target on retirement day. Returns and spending are in today's dollars. Taxes, fees and investment volatility are not included.
